What is a free invoice generator?

A free invoice generator is an online tool that lets you create a professional invoice without installing software, signing up for an account, or paying a subscription. You enter your business details, your client's information, the services or products you are billing for, the applicable tax, and a due date — then the tool produces a clean, print-ready PDF.

Invoicey's free invoice generator is designed specifically for freelancers, contractors, consultants, and small businesses in Europe and the UK. Unlike US-centric invoicing tools, it understands EU VAT rules, French auto-entrepreneur requirements, UK post-Brexit invoicing, and intra-EU reverse charge VAT.

Who is it for?

  • Freelancers sending their first invoice and unsure what to include
  • Contractors who invoice occasionally and do not want a full accounting subscription
  • Consultants billing international clients in different currencies
  • French auto-entrepreneurs who need SIREN-compliant invoices with correct TVA handling
  • UK sole traders and contractors who need HMRC-compliant VAT invoices
  • German Freiberufler and Kleinunternehmer needing the correct legal notices
  • Small businesses testing invoice formatting before committing to paid software

What makes a legally valid invoice?

A legally valid invoice must include specific information depending on your country. In the UK, HMRC requires: your name and address, your VAT registration number (if VAT-registered), a unique sequential invoice number, the invoice date, a clear description of each item or service, the net amount, VAT rate and amount, and the total due.

In France, a compliant invoice (facture) must include: your SIREN or SIRET number, your professional address, the client's details, invoice number, date, a description of each line item, the applicable TVA rate, and — for auto-entrepreneurs below the VAT threshold — the mention “TVA non applicable, article 293 B du CGI.”

Invoicey automatically includes all required fields for your country. You choose your location settings once and every invoice you generate will include the correct legal information for that jurisdiction.

EU VAT and reverse charge explained

If you are a VAT-registered business in the EU supplying services to a VAT-registered business in another EU member state, the reverse charge mechanism applies. This means you do not charge VAT on the invoice — instead, your client accounts for the VAT in their own country. Your invoice must include the note “Reverse charge — VAT to be accounted for by the recipient.”

Invoicey handles this automatically when you select the correct client VAT status. It adds the required reverse charge notice and removes the VAT line from the invoice total, so you always send a compliant document.

Free vs. paid invoicing tools

The free invoice generator is fully functional for freelancers who invoice occasionally or are just starting out. For businesses that invoice regularly, a paid plan adds: saved client profiles, invoice history and search, recurring invoices, automated payment reminders, expense tracking, revenue analytics, and custom branding.

You can start with the free generator and upgrade at any point. Your free invoices remain accessible and any data you have entered persists if you create an account.
